Thank you & Remezcla.com feature

THANK YOU: to all of my friends, supporters and customers who give me the UMPF* to keep on truckin' and create new work for Mano y Metal.
It has been a really exciting week, jammed packed with goodness
and the feature interview on Remezcla.com gave me all sorts of happy feelings :)
It also made me wish my mom had a facebook so I could post if on her wall.... I might make her one, even though I run the risk of getting smacked on the head (yes, she still exercises the right to give me a wack on the head when I "deserve" it or bother her) for making her one... but I wonder if I can lure her into FB.
ANYWAY, re-focus: Adriana Gallardo really asked me some good questions and got the wheels turning in my brain the way I haven't had in a while and it was a fun selection of questions to think about, answer and share with you all!

<3
AND It was such a priviledge to be hand selected for the interview amongst the
SEA of Talent(o) that there is out there!
so a huge cyber hug and THANK YOU to all of you
for reading, sharing and tweeting the interview!

have a HAPPY FRIDAY!
xoxo.
Des, Mano y Metal.

If you haven't check out the interview you can here

or just scroll down as the good o' copy and paste was applied.

Mano y Metal: Hardcore Bling

Mano y Metal: Hardcore Bling

Not all souls deserve the same bling. All metal, and all love, is the philosophy of  local designer Desiree Castro who crafts pieces only the hands and impulses of a Little Village entrepreneur can. More than accessories she creates pieces that echo the voices of her stylish and wordly clientele.

BASIC INFO
Roots: Mexican American, Born and raised in Little Village, Chicago.
Day job: Sniper. Just playing. I am hostage to a cubicle 9-5pm everyday. Aiming to break free soon and do Mano y Metal full-time.
Recent Pandora stations: Lykke Li, Julieta Venegas, & Kid Cudi, I am obsessed with Kid Cudi, like,  I love him.
ABOUT HER WORK:
Why jewelry?
I am not a ‘pearl on a strand of silver,’ type of girl–I like loud, vibrant, thought-provoking, sometimes rude and obnoxious, distinguishing jewelry. I like the type of jewelry that can make you stand out in a crowd, and be the red against the mass of beige, so after being utterly inspired by a street vendor making wire jewelry this summer, I said: “I can do this, I can make my own jewelry.” Then I had no self-control over the urge to create and I have been generating work nonstop since.
Why metal?
I finally found something that can handle me. I hit the metal with all I got: emotions, love, sass, aggression, and it survives me and braves the vortex of my creativity emerging beautifully, able to carry my messages and share them with the world. I don’t do delicate well, so me and metal, that is all love right there.
What are the funniest pieces for you to create?
Ok, I like to use the word “mama” in a lot of my pieces, yes, I was that kid who said “your mama” jokes in elementary school and that easy humor hasn’t left me. So in my creations you will find earrings, double-finger rings and cuff bracelets stamped with: “Yo Mama”, “Mama Don’t Play That” & my most favorite to hand stamp is “Listen to Your Mama!”

When did you start this type of work?
I started making jewelry in August 2010 and launched Mano y Metal on Etsy in October 2010 and it has been a snow-ball effect from that point on as each piece I create propels me forward to explore new possibilities, materials and avenues with Mano y Metal.
Does all your work have a message?
Yes. I create each piece intentionally, meaning, I create my pieces to carry a voice, personality, ability to evoke a smile and celebrate key qualities in people. Amidst the vast differences that distinguish each person from the next, we are linked by a common thread, a sharing of perspective, and we connect. Hence, it has been overwhelmingly inspiring to experience people gravitating to my work and connect with my pieces, demonstrating to me that even if you live across the globe, are of a different gender, age, or culture, people get it-“it” being the intention I give each piece, and that is amazing.
How has Chicago influenced your work?
Chicago has influenced me tremendously, growing up in Little Village, with the culture, vibrant colors and people, combined with my mother being the main advocate for my exploration and appreciation of the arts, and definitely the street smarts gathered from city dwelling, all chiseled and defined my character to be one that you see expressed in Mano y Metal. I cannot deny how Chicago influences my work anymore that I can deny that I need coffee in the morning.
What other art forms influence your work?
Theater! Dance! Spoken Word and Paintings! They all evoke inspiration for me but my biggest love affair is with words, the power they carry and how they transform. I have a background in theater, dance, playwriting and once upon a time, I even painted portraits, so they all inspire me, but anything with words pulls at my soul, and I move with it.
Advice for other independent artist in Chicago?
If you are going to do anything with your art, do it with all your heart, and keep pushing forward despite all the obstacles, use your creativity to develop alternatives to reaching your goals, but always remember they are reachable.
Plans for the future?
I’d like to start collaborating with other artists, and also since I am a one-woman show, it can get exhausting to juggle all the logistics of running a small business myself.  I think it would be cool to start branching out and working with perhaps a photographer to help me shoot my products  and does anyone want to help me with learning how to pay business taxes?

After so long of not painting, I decided to pick up a paintbrush and apply it to jewelry. It has been quite liberating and relaxing to swirl the colors and create pieces that can never be duplicated, are wild and FAR FROM NEAT, & within a single pair will NOT you find any sort of "identical" paintbrush strokes, instead all I can promise is: similarity.

And that is the most fun with these hand painted creations, that they carry the stamp of *true originality, as even if I duplicate the color palette, I can never, ever move the paintbrush in the same order and duplicate these as you see them. Which means, if you like these you should get them because once they are gone, they are gone.*
**I titled this collection "Love Affair" because since the first day I jumped into jewelry making, I have worked only with metals-- and now I am having a love affair with the swirl of a paintbrush on wood, and enjoying every minute of it.

Thanks for stopping by!

Ding,Ding: 200 online sales! :D

Just reached 200 online sales on my Mano y Metal-Etsy store! :D
My 200th sale was to Brooklyn, NY.

Which brings me to my next back-flip in happiness-- Mano y Metal pieces have traveled to ends of the world that I have dreamed about visiting one day....

Seriously, how is it that the jewelry pieces I create in a little cluttered corner of my apartment in Chicago make it to be shipped to parts of the world I have only seen in movies and flipped through in national geographic magazines at the dentist office waiting rooms?

 blows my mind.

Mano y Metal is being worn in:
Italy, France, London, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Hawaii, New York, California, TX, PA, FL, SC, OH, WI, AZ, OR, CT, WA, TN, KS, MD, CO, GA, VA, MA, and of course alllll over my BELOVED hometown:
C-H-I-C-A-G-O, IL.! :D

and that leaves me with a huge virtual hug to give you all and HUGE thank you for supporting, believing in and wearing my hand crafted creations.

All of you have kept me going, despite the obstacles, the love you all show to Mano y Metal keeps me going and made it possible to reach this point in only 7months.

I look forward to the next 7 months and 200 more sales.

<3 you all.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Mano y Metal is on TV! UrbanoTV with Dominizuelen in POPLitical!

First off, I fell in love with Dominizuelen when I saw them transform fluidly from one character to another in their 2woman show: "People in the City" they had me CRACKING UP constantly!

And I am a woman that can be won over in her HEART by:
1. food and 2. HUMOR.
So all I needed was a buffet and I would have been set! But yes, Lori & Wendy who are "Dominizuelen" are bringing IT ("it" defined by political highlights, humor, culture, basically what news anchors tends to keep VOID in their coverage).
& now they have captured the cyber world by storm on UrbanoTV with their channel: POPlitical!

and guess what?
Mano y Metal Hand Painted earrings were adorning Dominizuelen on their most recent episode of POPlitical! :D

(oh yea, oh yea-- does a Will Smith back in "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" type of happy dance)

CHECK IT OUT!

May 3, 2011

I think I need an Assistant.

So on my way into reaching for the orange juice yesterday, I spotted slices of chihuahua (delicious mexican cheese (and no I am not saying it's delicious because I am mexican or love (OBSESSED WITH) cheese- it really is delicious!)) so of course, because I have no self control when it comes to cheeses I grabbed the cheese along with the orange juice... These two food items are my sad substitution for breakfast as I was running late for work already... so I bite into the cheese and BAM! my crown falls out-- exposing my root canal sanctuary.

Now, I know this blog is supposed to be about Mano y Metal, jewelry and art, but this story has a purpose in that direction...
So, there I am with cheese and my crown and thinking: NOOOOOOOOOO I HATE THE F*%*# dentist! eff, eff!

So I go to the dentist,... and of course he beats up my mouth with shots, tools, poking, gluing and proding and I am in so much pain and tired after my visit... like throbbing, & all-my: ignoring-skills-can't ignore-this type of discomfort and I want to sleep for days at this point but then I think: "But I got orders I had to work on, and orders to ship, and people to email, and pictures to edit, and items to post and things to tweet and... and... and... I NEED AN ASSISTANT!

I do, I am not being a diva about it, I am not someone who likes to ask for help (ever, which is not neccessarily good) and I enjoy being active in EVERY part of the creative, business and logistical process of Mano y Metal.... but come on, maybe I can get someone to ship items for me? (This week it was to Hawaii, France & Chicago :)
Prep all the shipping items, help me stay organized?
Clean my work station because it tends to look like a tornado whirled in and around it sometimes... which stresses me out....
and the essence of this "assistant talk" is TIME.

I would be rewarded time if someone helped me do the small, tedious stuff that zaps hours away from me without even warning me it will....
I've played with the idea before and put it on the "yeahright" shelf... but you know what: I think I need help.
WHEW! there I said it...
Don't count on ever hearing me say that again...
but my good o' handcraftin' business is going good and I know I could get SOOO much more done CREATIVELY if I had someone who helped me a lil bit...

but then who would I get?
My sister still has the rebel and say no to everything I ask attitude.... and my brother has a girlfriend... my mom is overworked as it is... my kid is only 4 (although he totally takes pictures of me wearing teh jewelry that totally make it to my online shop)... my friends all have jobs and school... and most importantly, I'd need this person...
to be...
oppisite me in some ways and the same way in others:
perhaps calm? organized... effective, organized... organized...
multi-talented and multi-organized?

anyway, my tooth is feeling better and I am glad it made me think seriously about possibly, maybe, perhaps... having someone help me out once in a while... summer is coming and sunlight lends to all sorts of possibilities.

thanks for reading!
opinions welcomed :)

xoxo.
